Empowering undocumented young people to achieve educational and career goals

Program Overview

Through our Higher Education Initiatives, we seek to elevate and increase institutional support for undocumented students at California colleges and universities. We lead presentations / workshops and create resource materials to inform students, educators, and allies about the challenges and opportunities facing undocumented young people as they pursue college.

Higher Education Fellowship Overview

We believe that young people with personal knowledge and a direct connection to the undocumented experience are the most inspiring and effective messengers and trainers. We are eager to bring on an undocumented young person, who is committed to pursuing a career in educational access, to join our Higher Education team. The Higher Education Fellow will strengthen our efforts to elevate and increase institutional support for undocumented students at California colleges and universities.


Roles & Responsibilities

Presentations & Events
  • Deliver in-person or virtual presentations about accessing and paying for college as an undocumented student
  • Share personal educational history and aspirations to motivate and inspire other undocumented students and educators
  • Connect audience members with relevant educational resources
  • Engage with college students, educators, parents, administrators, etc. at tabling and outreach events
  • Provide logistical support for important trainings and conferences, including as needed: planning, outreach, tabling, notetaking, and co-facilitating,
Educational Resources
  • Collect information about evolving needs of undocumented young people and educator allies to inform creation of new educational resources
  • Support Director of Higher Education Initiatives in design and dissemination of educational resources by providing student perspective and feedback on outreach materials and campaigns
  • Coordinate inventory of educational materials including outreach box, resource binders and surplus
  • Support Director of Higher Education Initiatives in building and maintaining regional contact and dissemination lists
General
  • Be willing to share their personal story to inform current educational policy regarding undocumented students in higher education (i.e. media, legislative visits, research, reports, etc.)
  • Serve as a role model for E4FC community members who are interested in working in higher education

Qualifications

The Higher Education Fellow will be thoroughly committed to E4FC’s mission and vision. In addition, the Higher Education Fellow should meet the following qualifications:

  • Graduated from a four-year college or university
  • Direct knowledge and personal connection to the undocumented experience
  • Committed to supporting undocumented young people (primarily college students)
  • Passionate about presenting to educators, counselors, and administrators serving undocumented young people
  • Knowledge about institutional barriers that undocumented students face in colleges and universities in California
  • Willingness to learn to develop and implement an individual work plan
  • Ability to work well in a team and/or group setting
  • Flexible work and/or school schedule
  • Access to some form of reliable transportation
  • Preferred: Currently enrolled in a Masters in Counseling or Student Affairs graduate program or recently graduated from a 4 year university
  • Preferred: Career interest in working with undocumented young people in an educational setting (i.e. Student Affairs, Counseling, Academic Advisor, EOP/EOP&S, etc.)
  • Preferred: Familiarity or direct experience with California Community Colleges
  • Preferred: Able to comfortably lead presentations and workshops in two languages

Time Commitment
  • Attend a mandatory opening overnight weekend retreat from June 30-July 1, 2018
  • Commit to 15-20 hours/week from June 30, 2018 through May 31, 2019
  • Attend professional development trainings on Fridays

Grant

Assuming the Higher Education Fellow fulfills all program requirements, he/she will receive a $9,900-$13,200 grant to support their participation in the program. The grant will be disbursed in monthly installments of $900-$1,200, upon successful completion of program requirements and responsibilities.
